Gladwell's New Gallery |
Scope & Content |
Advertising poster. Gladwell's New Gallery of Broad Street House, 73 Old Broad Street and appears to have been used as flyer to advertise the shop's Works of Art for sale. ' Christmas Presents and New Year Gifts' The centre panel gives all the information and around the edge are drawings of chinese figures at various activities. We are not sure how this rice paper art gallery advertisement came into the Waimate Museum & Archive collection. London's Gladwell & Company Gallery was established in 1752 and continues today as Gladwell & Patterson. Henry William Gladwell (1834-1893) ran the business with his brother Alfred from 1879. In the late 19th century Harry Gladwell, son of Henry, travelled to Paris where he made an impression on a struggling young artist, one Vincent Van Gogh. Both were young men working at the French Art Dealer Goupils. Harry and Vincent became friends and shared an apartment. The Gladwells later hosted Vincent on his numerous travels to England. Vincent visited the gallery and then the family home. In a letter to his brother Vincent wrote: "We know each other so well, his work was my work, the people he knows there I know too, his life was my life," During the war the gallery received a direct hit on its archives. Virtually everything was lost including all the letters written by Van Gogh to Harry. Gladwell's Gallery had many locations and branches. This print is helping the Gallery in its research to establish the various locations. |
