Embroided postcard - To my dear daughter |
Scope & Content |
Brightly embroidered postcard with pink rosebuds and green fernlike leaves 'To my dear daughter.' . Message on back of card reads 'To Jane from Daddy with love. XX France April 25. 1917' 218855 W H Mills Beautiful hand embroidered postcards were very popular with servicemen on duty in France. The delicately embroidered cards, crafted by French and Belgian women refugees, were sent back home to loved ones and became treasured mementos from "the boys over there". Finished embroidered strips were sent to factories for cutting and mounting on postcards. Recipients of several of these postcards were members of the family of William Henry Mills of Waimate. Mr Mills served in World War One with "A" Company of the NZ Rifle Brigade in the 16th reinforcements, mainly in France and Belgium. |
