"The German People Offers Peace" Armistice This flyer has handwritten notes around it - "Inportent" (sic) (Important) "Please don't loose this: "George W.A. Cooling 2.11.18 An Armistice Flyer belonging to George Cooling. This is a German flyer offering an armistice at the Western Front, 1918. The flyer communicates the German armistice offer. It was probably written by Germans and published in English. The flyer has handwritten notes around it - 'Inportent', Please dont loose this', and 'George W.A. Cooling 2.11.18'. Lance Corporal George William Andrew Cooling (Service No. 24142) embarked on board the ‘Willochra’ from Wellington on 27 May 1916 along with fellow servicemen from the 13th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The destination port was Plymouth, Devon, England. War records reveal his occupation was listed as a farmhand and next of kin was his father who lived in Cricklewood, Albury, South Canterbury. George Cooling moved to Waimate sometime after WWI. He died on 2nd November 1969 aged 76 years and is buried in the Waimate cemetery. Cemetery records also show that his wife and child died in 1926 (during childbirth). |
