Letter to Santa from Bella Gibson |
Scope & Content |
Letter to Santa Claus written in 1918 by Bella Gibson (12 years). The Gibson family lived at Glenavy and ran a poultry hatchery for 2 generations. This letter to Santa Claus was written in 1918 by Bella (Catherine Isabella) Gibson when she was 12 years of age. Bella was the daughter of David and Kate Gibson. The Gibsons lived at Glenavy in Waimate District, and ran a poultry hatchery for two generations. A transcript of the letter reads: 'Glenavy 3rd Nov., 1918 My Dear Santa Claus, I am writing to tell you that I will be glad to see you or your bundle of toys again. I saw your photo in Friday nights paper with your bundle on your back, and I know that you were on your rounds again. You must be an important old fellow as I have read a lot of poetry and stories about you, and you always have the same happy, jolly face. One day before Christmas last year mum was in Oamaru and she saw you talking to a lot of little boys and girls. With the cloth you brought to us last year mum made us some pinafores. I expect you will have a lot more little children to go to this year than you had last year and you will have to start earlier to get finished by Christmas time. I will be twelve years old in February and I should like for Christmas, a book, a few ribbons and one of your stockings, and any other thing you think would be useful to a girl of my age. Thank you very much for what you brought me last year. I will close now. Hoping you get a good night for your travels. I am your loving girl Bella.' |
