Paybook WWI G.W.A.Cooling started 22 Dec 1918 plus newspaper clippings regarding: returning soliders on troopship Kia Ora May 7/8, 1919. List names on 64 men of South Canterbury men on board. The book also includes newspaper clippings regarding returning soldiers on the troopship 'Kia Ora' on May 7/8 , 1919. Pay books were issued to all personnel and were carried on the person at all times. They contain a wealth of information about the individual, his service history, record of pay and allowances. The Army Book number 64 comes in a variety of fabric covers with different printing on the front. Some have a white, typed label glued to the front cover. This was applied by the Pay Office on board transport and hospital ships where theye were stored for the duration of the journey Lance Corporal George William Andrew Cooling (Service No. 24142) embarked on board the ‘Willochra’ from Wellington on 27 May 1916 along with fellow servicemen from the 13th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The destination port was Plymouth, Devon, England. War records reveal his occupation was listed as a farmhand and next of kin was his father who lived in Cricklewood, Albury, South Canterbury. George Cooling moved to Waimate sometime after WWI. He died on 2nd November 1969 aged 76 years and is buried in the Waimate cemetery. Cemetery records also show that his wife and child died in 1926 (during childbirth). |
