Summary |
Waikakahi is a farming district on the extreme southern edge of the Province of Canterbury, New Zealand. With a southern boundary on the Waitaki River, it stretches from the coast into the hill country south west of the South Canterbury town of Waimate. "Waikakahi: Fulfilling the Promise" tells the story of this typical New Zealand farming district from the time of the earliest Maori visits to the region through to the celebration in 1999 of the centenary of the subdivision of the Waikakahi Estate under the Liberal Government's land for settlements legislation. It is a story of struggle and achievement as the Maori, the run holders and then the family farmers of the years after settlement sought to make livings in one of New Zealand's rural heartlands. |
