The opening of the Waimate Swimming Baths by Mayor John Manchester who is standing on the end of the diving board. Several people seated at side and swimmers waiting. The first swimming baths in Waimate were erected in Paul Street and opened in February 1908 by the Mayor, Mr John Manchester. All councillors were present for this important occasion. Story has it that a member of the public crept up on one of the councillors and pushed him in fully clothed. After a short time order was restored and the ceremony continued |
