Description |
One white counterpane, made for the Red Cross during World War One, in 1917. - made of up of white cotton squares which have been embroidered on, and then backed with a length of white linen which also forms the edge. The embroidery cottons used are red, pink, blue, white and brown. - the main centre panel has the Union Jack flag and a Red Ensign with a bulldog sitting underneath with a lifebelt and an anchor, and the year 1917. - the other 24 panels include embroideries of flowers, teddy bears, cats, a pig and a cattle beast, the warship - HMS NZ, birds, anchors with name Admiral Beatty, Mrs Elliot's name - Lily Cuthbertson, Glenavy, S Canterbury, NZ, one panel has the words 'For Freedom and Liberty', has the flags of France, Great Britain and Belgium. |

The counterpane was worked by Lily Cuthbertson, (now Elliot), at her last year at Glenavy Primary School, in 1917. Mrs Elliot recounted "I embroidered the squares and my mother made up the quilt. We gave it to the Red Cross, and it was sent to England, and we presume, used in a military hospital. After the war a letter came to the 'Mayor' of Glenavy asking if I was still lived there, if so there was a small memento of the late war and if I wrote back it would be sent to me. I did so and my quilt arrived back". |
